Call it a snapper, call it Pac-Man, call it a chomper — whatever the name, it is the rare paper toy that does something. Squeeze one end and the mouth opens; squeeze differently and it snaps shut on whatever is unlucky enough to be nearby.

Best of all, you do not need origami paper. A sheet straight out of the printer is exactly the right rectangle, and most of the folds are shapes you have probably met before — there is a hat hiding in there, and a boat with a sail that you later hide away. Fold one plain, then fold a second and give it teeth.

Some people call this an origami snapper and some call it Pac-Man, but I like to call it a chomper, because it makes this origami sound hungrier, with bigger and sharper teeth. Rowrr! It is folded from rectangular paper rather than square origami paper, and it is very easy to make. As you fold, you may recognise a couple of familiar shapes along the way — a hat, a boat — before we mould them into this awesome chomper.

STEP 1. Take a sheet of ordinary 8.5 × 11 inch rectangular paper.

STEP 2. Fold the paper in half by bringing the left side over to the right side, then unfold.

STEP 3. Fold the paper in half again by bringing the top edge down to the bottom edge.

STEP 4. Fold the top left and right corners into the middle to form a triangle.

STEP 5. Take the top layer of the bottom rectangular flaps and fold it up.

STEP 6. Turn the figure over.

STEP 7. Fold up the remaining bottom rectangular flap.

STEP 8. Open up the base of the triangle all the way until the figure becomes the shape of a diamond.

STEP 9. Lift the top layer of the bottom corners and fold it up to the top corner.

STEP 10. Turn the figure over.

STEP 11. As in step 9, fold the bottom corner up to the top corner. You should now have a triangle.

STEP 12. As in step 8, open the base of the triangle all the way until the figure becomes the shape of a diamond.

STEP 13. Take the top corners of the left and right sides and pull them apart to form a boat shape with a “sail” sticking out in the middle.

STEP 14. Open a flap on one side and tuck the “sail” inside to hide it.

STEP 15. Hold the back of the “boat” and squeeze the opposite ends together to make the chomper bite.

STEP 16. Here is your chomper, decorated with sharp teeth!

Open and close it to make the chomper bite — and keep your fingers well clear of those teeth.
